Backgammon is a game of holiday or free time game, it is hugely popular as a gambling pastime. You can choose your style. You can play for free or for money, and on most serious backgammon sites you can also play for real money. Playing backgammon for money can be fun and exciting, but you should also be careful. If you are a beginner, you should start out playing only for modest amounts, especially against people you don't know.
When backgammon is played for money, an addition to the traditional game comes in the form of a doubling cube. This is a single die, usually bigger in size that normal dice and has the numbers 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 presented on its interface. The role of the doubling cube is to keep tabs on the stakes of the game. During the backgammon game where betting is taking place, players can opt to double the stakes of the game, depending on their position on the board and how confident they feel in winning the game. The opponent has the option of declining this offer or he may accept.
The decision to offer and accept/decline an offer is not as simple as it seems. Players know that their decisions will affect the money that is at stake and need to think long and hard before making a choice. If a player offers to double a stake, it should not be on a whim and it should be after careful consideration that he is truly ahead in the game. This is especially so because after the opponent has accepted, he owns the cube and can, theoretically, redouble the stakes immediately after the first offer. Very often, a player can lose the game – and a lot of money – because of not having thought out the original doubling offer very carefully.
Doubling and redoubling is used as a playing strategy in backgammon. If done at the right moment in the game, it can cause the opponent to resign and therefore the player to win the game. If players want to offer a double or, alternatively, they suddenly have to make a choice between accepting or declining the opponent’s offer of a double, there are a number of ways for them to determine their next move. Firstly, they can try counting pips that will give them a broader picture of their own position on the board. Secondly, they can consider how many potential hits they have, how many prime-blocks each side has and the general position of the other checkers. Once all this has been taken into account, players can choose how they will continue betting in their game of backgammon and hopefully make the right decision to keep their losses as low as possible and their gains as high as possible.
